About the Restoration

EcoTexas, in concert with the Austin community as well as the City of Austin, hopes to remove all invasive plant species from Zilker Nature Preserve.

Invasive species are a serious detriment to the community, as they are responsible for numerous environmental, economic, and public health problems. Additionally, invasive species pose a large threat to state of life of native species, because they wreak havoc on natural habitats, causing them to be unsuitable and sometimes dangerous for natives. For this reason, it is essential to intervene in this ongoing destruction process by eliminating invasive species and reducing the risk of their presence. EcoTexas is working to succeed in doing so by removing invasive plant species from local parks and preserves, thereby restoring the beauty of Austin’s natural environment.

Did you know?

  • - Invasive species are the root cause of $130 billion in environmental and public health damage nationwide

  • - $44 billion in public health damage in the United States alone is due to invasive species

  • - Studies have shown 42% of endangered species are forced into their threatened state by the presence of invasive species

  • - Over 85% of invasive plant species were introduced for landscape purposes by unaware consumers
